This is sure to cause a bit of trouble I personally think Ducati got caught with their pants down, the 999 is now in its 5th year of racing, a long time for a race bike. Bayliss is riding on the edge all the time to try and keep the Duc competative at the top level, resulting in accidents he can well do without, the Ducs lack of power is well seen on long straights, the 4s just leave them behind, im all for close racing, but the 999 is no longer the right bike, so yes they should be able to use the new 1098. To have V twins and 4s at the same capacity gives the 4s the advantage. And yes to give Ducati the 1098 could give them the advantage, but 2008 would be a development year, and what would they do with Troy? He has a contract to ride in 2008.

Yes the Ducati at the first round got blown down the straight BUT TB set new track records at just about every track he tested on before the season opener...including a new record at Losail from memory.
That's why TB was miffed when he faired so poorly at the opening round of the championship.
The rules allow more modified twin cylinder machines. Ducati clearly want the rules to cater for them rather do what everyone else is doing, adapting to the rule book.

I believe that Ducati are proposing to increase capacity by 200cc, but give up the engine mods they are allowed to give parity. The main reason for this is to reduce costs. To compete with the 4 cylinder bikes they have to rev the engines much harder than they want, and so are experiencing reliability , and longevity problems. Remember the twins were originally allowed a 33% capacity advantage over the 4 cyls when the SBK started, now they are only looking for a 20% advantage. This would reduce the cost of running a Ducati not only for the works team but for the privateers also.

New rules are out:
• Displacement capacities. o 2 cylinders over 850cc up to 1200cc o 3 cylinders over 750cc up to 1000cc o 4 cylinders over 750cc up to 1000cc
• Minimum weights. o 2 cylinders over 850cc up to 1200cc: 168kg o 4 cylinders over 750cc up to 1000cc: 162kg
Minimum weight of 2 cylinders over 850cc up to 1200cc will be updated, if needed, during the Championship in steps of ±3kg to 171kg as a maximum and 162kg as a minimum.
• Air-restrictors. Only 2 cylinders over 850cc up to 1200cc will be fitted with air-restrictors. Initial size will be equivalent to a Ø50mm circular area. Air-restrictors size will be updated, if needed, during the Championship in steps of ±2mm of diameter in a range from equivalent to a Ø46mm circular area to no air-restrictor at all.
• Balance of different motorcycle concepts. Weight limit and then air-restrictors size of 2 cylinders over 850cc up to 1200cc machines will be updated, if needed, during the Championship, by a system analysing the race points obtained.
• Tuning level. All machines will have the same level of tuning presently applied to 4 cylinders over 750cc up to 1000cc, with the exception of connecting rods that must be standard for 2 cylinders over 850cc up to 1200cc.
• Homologation numbers. For 2008 and 2009 all manufacturers, irrespective of their total production numbers, will have to produce a minimum of 1000 bikes in order to get an homologation. For 2010 onwards the minimum production number will be increased to 3000 bikes.
The complete set of the new 2008 Superbike technical rules will be issued by FIM during next week
- Strange the 3 cyl machines are 1000cc; wouldn't it make more sense to have them 1100cc? - Don't understand why the rulemakers didn't follow the BSB rules & do away with weight penalties & air intake restictors. That stuff sounds more like stupid touring car rules...
